Trying Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Markers for the First Time!

   My art supply obsession struck again! I just couldn't resist trying these. I actually first saw the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Markers online a few years ago and had them on my wish list ever since. A few months ago I treated myself to the set of 20 and just got the chance to finally sit down and try them!

   I absolutely love Faber-Castell's other products, their Polychromos are one of my go-to colored pencils and their Pitt Artist Pens are one of the only markers I will use in fine art. They make fantastic watercolor pencils, also under the Albrecht Durer name. A fun thing about Faber-Castell is that all their color lines match, which means if you love a color in one of their lines you can get it in all their other supplies too! So, I was super excited to see that they also offered watercolor markers and was eager to try them.

   The only thing is, I had next to no experience with watercolor markers as a medium. I decided I would take what I know from working with watercolors and with markers and see what I could do. This led to a very fun and experimental sketchbook session!


 

Some key features I noted about these markers:

1. These are artist grade and have lightfast ratings so I can ensure my work won't fade.

2. I was not overly impressed with their blend-ability at first, but I think part of it was that there was a learning curve for me, and I did get better at it with time. 

3. These would be great for on-the-go sketching and plein air work!

4. They are very vibrant.

5. They would be wonderful for mixed-media applications and are great for creating special effects!

6. They are available in sets and open stock!

My First Gallery Experience!!

  Last night I attended my first gallery opening! The show that I am in is "PLAY" at Harlow Gallery in Hallowell Maine. The object of the show is to Celebrate the Spirit of Play. Artwork that is inspired by children or childhood that is whimsical or humorous. The artwork was chosen by a jury to be placed in the show and the exhibition will be running through April 27th. We were encouraged to bring food for a pot luck style opening, I brought one of my favorite pasta salads and it was a hit, over a pound and I barely brought home left overs. What does it mean to be an Artist?

Surely it means different things to different people. Many say you are an artist if you are able to create, be it architecture, cooking, crocheting, singing etc. Then there are those who say anybody can be an artist. Others say you are only an artist if you are good at what you create. That's where things get so confusing. Who decides what is good and what isn't? Art is so subjective. What is Art?
